In Armenia and across the world, June 1 is celebrated as International Children’s Day. On this day, a variety of events and celebrations are organized for children who are lavished with gifts, balloons and flowers, and are the center of everyone’s attention.
The children of the Family and Community NGO of Metsamor, however, like to celebrate this day a little differently: instead of waiting for adults to organize celebrations for them, they do their best to bring joy to others in their community.
Using this “Children for Children” approach, the young members of the Palancho Children’s Puppet Theater visited the “Abovyan” Penitentiary and organized a charity performance for the children of female convicts from the penitentiary. After the play, the performers spent time playing and making friends with the children at the penitentiary.
Excited over this visit, the children decided to do more. Later in the month, they visited the Kharberd Specialized Orphanage, where they organized a real celebration for their peers with disabilities with an interactive theater play, games and other fun activities.
By choosing to celebrate in this way, the young beneficiaries of the Family and Community NGO brought joy and celebration to children who are often excluded from celebratory events and ignored by society. This wasn’t the first time they sought to entertain and spend time with underprivileged children. In fact, many children consider touring with the theater group and performing for their peers as the most fulfilling and enjoyable part of being in the Center.
The Family and Community NGO of Metsamor is jointly sponsored by the Tufenkian Foundation, Armenian Apostolic Church – Armavir Diocese, WCC Armenia Round Table Foundation, UMCOR and PH International.
